“Seet ko ci Google”*. This phrase in Wolof will now take on a whole new meaning with the launch of the Wolof Interface for Google Web Search in Senegal.

In our mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful, language localization plays a very important part, and the Google Africa team is proud to provide support for languages spoken by millions of African people. The ‘Google in Your Language’ initiative already supports many African languages and now we are taking a more hands-on approach: reaching out to interested universities and other volunteers in the community, training them on our translation tools and holding a fun workshop where volunteers can contribute their translations for Google Web Search in their language, with guidance from language moderators.

Credit for making the Google interface in Wolof available goes to 45 volunteers who, in collaboration with Google Senegal and the Universite Gaston Berger of Saint Louis in northern Senegal, gathered on campus for an exciting and productive translation marathon. Mohamadou El-Hadj Nguer, the professor who led the translation effort, is passionate about efforts to bring Wolof online, and believes that being able to search in Wolof will not only increase the value of writing in Wolof but also create an opportunity for growth of the language on the Internet.

Seet ko ci Google*: Google Search désormais disponible en Wolof

“Seet ko ci Google”*. Cette phrase en wolof prendra désormais un tout nouveau sens. En effet, avec le lancement de l’interface Wolof de Google Web Search il est désormais possible pour les Internautes du Sénégal d’accéder à Google en wolof pour effectuer leurs recherches.

Dans le cadre de notre mission d’organiser l’information à l’échelle mondiale et de la rendre utile et accessible, le support des langues joue un rôle très important. Google Africa est ainsi très fier d’avoir permis la prise en charge de plusieurs langues utilisées par des millions d’africains. Nous allons plus loin, avec l’initiative « Google in Your Language » (GIYL), en permettant d’étendre cette prise en charge à toutes les langues : GIYL offre à des volontaires passionnés par une langue comme le Wolof et soucieux de promouvoir sa présence en ligne, des outils pour traduire l’interface Google dans cette langue.

Tout le bénéfice de la disponibilité de Google en Wolof revient cependant à l’équipe de l’équipe de 45 volontaires (étudiants et experts) qui, grâce à la collaboration entre Google et l’Université Gaston Berger (UGB) de Saint Louis, se sont réunis au mois de juin sur le campus de l’UGB pour un marathon de traduction enthousiaste et productif. Mohamadou El-Hadj Nguer, enseignant à l’UGB, qui a dirigé les travaux de traduction, explique l’enthousiame des experts et des volontaires par leur envie de renforcer la presence du Wolof en ligne et leur conviction que la disponibilité de Google Search en Wolof va donner plus de raisons d’écrire dans cette langue et lui donner une opportunité de développement sur Internet.
